1- The acid test

"An acid test is something that proves whether something is good, effective, etc, or no"

Examples:

  • The acid test of a good driver is whether he remains calm in an emergency.
  • The acid test of a good leader is the extent to which they select a style to suit the circumstances.

2- A bad hat

"Someone who deliberately stirs up trouble"

Examples:
  • Everyone knows that he is really a bad hat . 
  • Do not lend him any money; he's a bad hat and will never repay you.

3- In a blue funk

"In a state of panic or terror"

Examples: 
  • Anne has been in a blue funk since her dog died
  • Just because the bride's mother is late, you needn't get in a blue funk.

4- To die in harness

"Expire while working, keep working to the end"

Examples:
  • She knows she'll never get promoted, but she wants to die in harness.
  • My grandfather was very hard working and brave and he died in harness.

5- Dead as doornail / dead as a dodo or herring

"Totally or assuredly dead; also finished"

Examples:

  • The cop announced that the body in the dumpster was dead as a doornail.
  • The Equal Rights Amendment appears to be dead as a herring.
