Introduction
Pure mathematics is the study of the basic concepts and structures that underlie mathematics. Its purpose is to search for a deeper understanding and an expanded knowledge of mathematics itself. Pure mathematics has as its main purpose the search for a deeper understanding of mathematics itself. As a result pure mathematics seems at first far removed from everyday life. However, many important applications have been the results of advances in pure mathematics. Historical experience shows that pure mathematics is one of the most useful parts of science. Pure mathematicians discover things which find applications later. Without pure mathematics, most of the "applied mathematics" and other sciences would be simply impossible.
