Examples:
  • When my dad found out I had failed the exams, he just blew his top.

2) A cock and bull story

"An unbelievable tale that is intended to deceive; a tall tale Jack told us some cock and bull story about getting lost."
Examples:
  • He told us some cock-and-bull story about having lost all his money.
  • He gave me some cock-and-bull story about having to be at his cousin's engagement party.

3) Below par

"Less than average, less than normal"
Examples:
  • Teaching in some subjects has been well below par.
  • The champion was playing well below par.

4) From pillar to post

"From one place or thing to another in rapid succession"
Examples:
  • She has buffeted about from pillar to post for ten years.
  • She was driven from pillar to post and each person she spoke to was more unhelpful than the last.

5) Call it a night

"To stop what one has been doing, for the remainder of the night."
Examples:
  • We agreed to call it a night and reconnoiter in the morning.
  • We both got a little fractious during this escapade, however, and I decided we should call it a night.
