1) The last ditch

"A desperate final attempt"
Examples:
  • They met in a last-ditch attempt to resolve their differences.
  • We're making a last-ditch effort to finish on time.

2) A square meal

"A substantial or complete meal"
Examples:
  • These airlines never feed you; I haven't had a square meal on one yet.
  • They haven't had a square meal for four or five days.

3) Run riot (wild)

"Behave in a frenzied, out-of-control, or unrestrained manner"
Examples:
  • I was afraid that if I left the toddler alone she would run amok and have a hard time calming down.
  • The weeds are running riot in the lawn
  • The children were running wild in the playground.

4) Set the pace

"Establish a standard for others to follow"
Examples:
  • The new saleswoman blew away everyone else's weekly averages, setting the pace for the entire team.
  • Jim has set the pace for the department, exceeding the monthly quota every time.

5) At times

"Occasionally, sometimes"
Examples:
  • Away from home for the first time, Mary was homesick at times.
  • The screenplay is at times too muddled to entertain or educate.
