Examples:

3) To send a person to Coventry

"To ostracize, or systematically ignore someone"
Examples:
  • The group decided to send the unpopular members to Coventry.
  • When I refused to help them cheat, the other students sent me to Coventry.

4) Beer and skittles

"People say that life is not all beer and skittles, meaning that it is not about self-indulgence and pleasure."
Examples:
  • Life is not all beer and skittles.
  • Did you think life was all beer and skittles?

5) The acid test

"An acid test is something that proves whether something is good, effective, etc, or not."
Examples:
  • The acid test of a good driver is whether he or she remains calm in an emergency.
  • For my own small study, the acid test was one of relevance.
