Examples:
  • We hummed and hawed for months before actually deciding to buy the house.
  • When asked what kind of woman he was looking for, he hemmed and hawed and finally admitted he was looking for a party girl.

2) To keep one’s fingers crossed

"To wish for luck for someone or something"
Examples:
  • I hope you win the race Saturday. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.
  • I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that everything goes well.

3) A storm in the teacup

"A situation where people get very angry or worried about something that is not important."
Examples:
  • I feel strongly that it is a storm in a teacup.
  • I think it's all a storm in a teacup - there's probably no danger to public health at all.

4) Wages of sin

"Doing bad things can get you in a lot of trouble."
Examples:
  • Serves him right. I always said, "The wages of sin is death.
  • Both were dark, dour and downright moralistic about the wages of sin.

5) To talk through one’s hat
"To be talking about a subject as if you know a lot about it when in fact you know very little."
Examples:
  • He was talking through his hat. I couldn't understand what he was saying.
