1. To eat one's words

"The idiom to eat one's words means to admit that you are or were mistaken, especially after a strong or public expression of opinion."
Examples:
  • He will have to eat his words. You said that I would never finish this race.
  • You will have to eat your words.

2. Dog on the manager

"Someone who keeps something that they do not really want in order to prevent anyone else from having it."
Examples:
  • Stop being such a dog in the manger and let your brother ride your bike if you're not using it.
  • What a dog in the manger!

3. A Close Shave

"A narrow escape."
Examples:
  • Wow, that was a close shave. I thought the guard would spot us.
  • A sharp razor gives a close shave.

4. A Freudian Slip

"A verbal mistake that is thought to reveal a repressed belief, thought, or emotion."
Examples:
  • That is the Freudian slip that I've been talking about.
  • Many claim that it was a Freudian slip, and that the PM really believes that he saved the world during the financial crisis.
5. A Gordian Knot

"A Difficult Problem"
Examples:
  • Homelessness in the inner cities has become a real Gordian knot.
  • She's got a Gordian knot of anger inside that she seems to nurture.
